How to Tell Others That Someone Has Died

Telling people that someone has died is one of the hardest conversations you may ever have. Whether you’re informing family, friends, colleagues, or neighbours, this guide offers gentle guidance on how to approach those conversations with care.

1. Start With Close Family and Friends

It is often best to contact the nearest family members first.

Speaking by phone or in person is usually the most sensitive approach.

Keep your wording simple and kind, such as:

“I’m so sorry to tell you that [name] has died.”

2. Share Only What You Feel Comfortable Sharing

You do not need to explain every detail.

Keeping things brief is completely acceptable:

  • What happened (if appropriate)
  • When it happened
  • Any immediate arrangements

You can update people later if more details become available.

3. Delegate Where Possible

It can help to ask someone you trust to contact:

  • Extended family
  • Friends
  • Community members
  • Clubs or groups the person belonged to

This reduces pressure on you during an emotional time.

4. Notify Employers and Colleagues

If your loved one was still working, inform their employer so they can:

  • Stop payroll
  • Offer support
  • Inform colleagues sensitively

5. Consider Posting a Formal Notice

Some families choose to place:

  • A death announcement
  • An obituary
  • A funeral notice

This can help reach people you may not have contact details for.

6. Telling Children Requires Extra Care

Use clear, simple language appropriate to their age.

See our guide: Support for Children After a Parent Dies.

7. Remember to Look After Yourself

These conversations are emotionally draining.

Take breaks, accept help, and lean on others for support.
